Taking 1 teaspoon of pharmaceutical-grade fish oil will cost you about $1 a day.

  • That dose will give you 2.5 grams of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
  • This is what we call a maintenance dose to maintain good health and to reduce the risk of future chronic disease.

You may balk at paying a little more than a $1 a day for dietary supplement. If so consider how often you’ve shelled out $3 for coffee from Starbucks or $1.25 for pop!

Recommendations for Taking Pharmaceutical-Grade Fish Oils

Goals: Amount of Long-Chain Omega-3 Fats

  • Maintenance:: 2.5 grams per day
    (1 teaspoon or 4 capsules) 
  • Improved cardiovascular health: 2.5 to 5 grams per day
    (1 to 2 teaspoons or 4 to 8 capsules)

If you begin taking high doses of fish oil, you probably don't need to adjust your calorie consumption to make up for the calories in fish oil.

Pharmaceutical-grade fish oil doesn’t contain that many calories in addition to the amounts that you’ll be taking on our dietary plan.

  • A maintenance dose of 2.5 grams of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids is about 40 calories.
  • Increasing to 10 grams a day will provide an additional 160 calories, and 20 grams of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids will add an additional 320 calories.

You have to remember that fat (especially long-chain omega-3 fat) doesn’t make you fat.

Increased insulin levels do that. However, on our dietary plan you’re eating only about 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day, so even if you take the highest dose of fish oil that we recommend, you’ll still be eating far fewer calories than you were when you weren’t following our program. If you’re going to indulge in extra calories, let them come from pharmaceutical-grade fish oil! Your brain will be eternally grateful.
